Ardillas Class
During this week we have been working on our daily routines and habits in order to get used to our new schedule. We have been working every morning on many concepts during circle time through songs. We worked with number recognition in our calendar, days of the week, months of the year, seasons, and talked about the weather by looking through the window.
In Mathematics this week we introduced math bits by counting (0-20) and the book EntusiasMAT. We have also been identifying shapes círculo (circle), triángulo (triangle), cuadrado (square), and rectángulo (rectangle) to name a few.The number we are emphasizing this week is one. They quantified and recognized it. Also, they compared and sorted the objects that belonged together like a hive with bees. Another main topic was adentro/fuera (inside/out), where they jumped in a hula hoop and colored the coins in the treasure chest.
In Reading and writing, we introduced Ludi bits by seeing the letters, making the appropriate sound and associating it with a word that beings with it as well as the first letter of their names. We played games and completed art projects that required the children identifying their names. They placed stickers on the first letter of their names, found their names after their chairs, and looked to recognize their name in a role counting game. Lastly, they started practicing tracing uppercase letters A-F.
In Social Studies they learned all about Gérmenes (Germs). The children observed images of germs, looked for germs with lupas (magnifying glasses), matched the germs to their color bubble on a page, attempted to identify how many germs were in each set, colored germs, and cleaned baby dolls that got dirty.
In Chess, the children identified the peon (pawn) piece by pointing to 1 of 2 pieces.

First Grade Class
Welcome to Week 1. I am very proud of our first graders for getting through their first full week of school. Each one of your children has helped us to make our first-week enriching and fun. I am enjoying getting to know your children and am enjoying having them get to know me. Through fun and learning, I know first grade will be an amazing experience for all. Let’s take a look at week 1.
Students worked on reading, math and writing concepts during this first week of school. Students worked on place value, addition/subtraction, time, identifying long and short vowel sounds, spelling and how to identify when to use a period, question mark or exclamation point in a sentence. It was so fun to see how smart your children already are and how much smarter they will get as the school year goes by.
Our first graders have been learning about the artist Kandinsky and re-creating one of his art pieces. Students have used markers, crayons, colored pencils and paint to create their replica of a famous Kandinsky piece.
Our first graders got their iPads this week. In the iPad, each student found educational apps like Khan Academy, Sight Word Ninja, Chess, and ABCya to name a few. It is very important for our first graders to be introduced to education through an array of platforms because as you know Maryel is strong on Howard Gardener’s Multiple Intelligence and the implementation of the iPad in our classroom caters to us as educators knowing that each student has their own way of learning and being a visual learner is one way for our students to learn.

We started practicing the sounds of the letter i, and saying the alphabet out loud. Also they were practicing vertical and horizontal lines, and we were practicing their names everyday.
In Math: We practiced every day the counting numbers 0 to 10. They reviewed how to write the numbers 0 and 1. What means 0 and nothing. We were doing different activities with different amount of things, so they counted the number that we said. We were recognizing different shapes as a triangle, square, circle, star… with the foam shapes, and they were counting how many they had of each..
In Music: we were dancing and singing two different Spanish songs. The first one was about a cat, and is for that we made the cat mask. The second one is about a clown, so we gave everybody a red nose to sing and dance the song as a clown.
